Today’s Bible Reading: Leviticus 18-20

Today’s Devotional: Leviticus 18

The laws in Leviticus 18 deal more particularly with the habits of a life separated to the Lord. Previously the laws fundamental focus was on matters of relationship to God. God gave Israel the Law to build a dividing line and set a distinction between what are the things of the Lord and what are not. What is acceptable to Him, and what is not.

Leviticus 18 covers the sins which would surround them on account of habits and customs of those in the land of Canaan, the reasons why God was kicking them out of Canaan.

First we see a call to separation in general terms. God distinctly forbids the children of Israel from conforming their actions to the doing of what they saw in Egypt and what they would see in Canaan.

God gives a promise that if they obey Him they will live in the promised land. God then names certain evil practices of the inhabitants of the land of Canaan, and we see an explaining of the judgement of God upon the inhabitants of Canaan. The reason for God’s judgement was found in their practices and terrible effects practicing them had on them and which led them to be utterly corrupt. And this emphasizes the crucial importance for the child of God not to be defiled by the practices seen in Leviticus 18.

We see similar parallels in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, Paul encourages the Christian to not walk according to our former ways before we knew Christ and according to the ways of those who are without Christ, but instead to walk worthy of the calling we have to live and instead put on the new image and value system we have been given in Christ.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 NLT
