Today’s Bible Reading: Exodus 31-34

Today’s Devotional: Exodus 31:1-11

God’s work in an individual

It first begins with God’s calling, not Moses’s or any other man, then God’s equipping. To appreciate what it means to be called by God and to be equipped by God, we need to remember the children of Israel had been made simple by centuries of slavery and almost certainly lacking any detailed artistic ability which would enable them to construct the Tabernacle or it’s objects according to the pattern God has given to Moses. And they would have been far removed from places we would compare to today as universities or higher places of knowledge.

The children of Israel were though gathered at the feet of God, and God is far superior to any task or fitting those He calls to complete any calling. The one God called is the one He filled His spirit with, that is a constant pattern we see all throughout scripture.

God gave:

  • Wisdom: capacity
  • Understanding: progress in apprehending an idea represented
  • Knowledge: attainment of skill

The result was “all manner of workmanship” which resulted from a man being filled with the Spirit of God.

Any work we do, we need to be careful that it is the work appointed by God, and if so, there is no reason to question He will equip and edify us perfectly by His Spirit.

A second thing to note here, this equipping was a spiritual equipping over physical objects. As we continue reading throughout scripture, God also gives spiritual equipping over priestly and spiritual giftings. The best this world can do is strengthen perhaps our natural giftings, but the world can not equip Spiritually where the Lord has not given a strengthening spiritually.

I pray that each of us will wait on the calling and equipping that only comes from the Lord, and not desire to rely on the calling and equipping found in the world, because the world only calls us to slavery.
