Today’s Devotional: Genesis 12:1-9

The Lord said to Abram

Genesis 12:1-3

The Lord spoke to Abram, The Lord invited Abram to join him in his eternal plan.

Matthew 22:1-14 Jesus tells us that all are chosen, but few accept God’s invitation.

Genesis 12:4

So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to Him.

Genesis 11:31

We saw that Abram was already heading to Canaan, then his father dies and he and all he has dwell in Haran.

The Lord stepped in and told Abram to get up and go. That there’s a new dwelling place He’s going to show Abram.

God had marked out a special desire for Abram’s life from eternity, and Abram had the choice to listen and obey or not.

Abram obeys these simple instructions the Lord has for his life, continues in the route he knew, and waited for the Lord to say what’s next. Hebrews 11:8-10 tells us that Abram trusted God for his eternal resting place.

Genesis 12:7

The Lord speaks to Abram again about what is to be given to his descendants. Because Abram made steps of obedience, the Lord could continue to bless Abram in the desired areas God had to bless him in. Abram could be trusted with God’s general will for his life, and so he could be trusted with God’s specific will for his life. Jesus in Luke 16:1-13 highlights this characteristic of Abram. In the parable Jesus used a dishonest servant to highlight that if a dishonest man plans for his future, then how much more those who are called by God should plan and prepare for their future in eternity. Abram didn’t despise the days of small things, Zechariah 4:9, Abram redeemed the days of small things by trusting in the Lord.

We could say Abram had received the wedding invitation, Matthew 22:1-14, and was on his way. Abram decided to accept the invitation.

Genesis 12:9

Abram continues to journey, going South.

Abram as soon as he heard the promise of what was still future, worshiped the Lord for how He was going to bless still future, and Abram did not seek to make the land he was sojourning through his final resting place. Abram is showing that he can be trusted with blessings and not hold the blessing above the eternal promise of the Lord.

When we look at the promises the Lord has given us or the blessings He has bestowed upon us do we then take our eyes off of what is still the eternal goal and objective of where the Lord desires to take us, and place our focus and our drive to then be about the blessing. I would like to encourage you that as the New Year is beginning to not allow the blessings and possibly even promises of the Lord of things from last year to become your main center of focus and enjoyment. Continue to allow Jesus Christ to be your center of focus just as Abram. Because the Lord still has more blessings to bestow upon Abram, and just think if Abram would have taken his focus off of God’s eternal perspective and blessing at this moment and made it on the land of Canaan, Abram could have possibly missed the place God had for Abram in His specific eternal plan.
