Today’s Reading: Genesis 17-19

Today’s Devotional: Genesis 17:1-8

The Lord appeared to Abram

Genesis 17:1

God appears to Abram and tells him who He is: Almighty God

Almighty: El Shaddai, most powerful

God then gives Abram a command; 1. To walk before Him, 2. and be blameless

Genesis 17:2

And with those conditions God would; 1. make a covenant with Abram, and 2. will multiply him exceedingly.

Genesis 17:4

God tells Abram “my covenant is with you…” In verse 2 God tells Abram if he walks before Him. Did Abram go to the store? Did Abram go anywhere? No. But God made a covenant, why?

Genesis 17:3

Then Abram fell on his face,

Where did Abram go?

Abram, fell on his face, to fall down before was a sign of trusting and accepting someone’s authority over and in their life. Abram worshiped. Genesis 50:18, 2 Chronicles 20:18

God gave at this moment.

What then is walking before God and being blameless?

Accepting God’s reign in our life.

  • God makes a covenant with Abram.
  • God gives Abram a new identity.
    • Identified by what God has done in Abraham, Genesis
17:5 father of multitude, for I have made you a father of
      many nations.
    • Abraham received every Spiritual Blessing of his
descendants at that moment, when he trusted the Lord.
Ephesians 1:3 – every spiritual blessing is given to us
when we place our trust in Jesus Christ, which
      is by Grace.

It was Adam and Eve’s falling short before God’s Word which separated them and us from God and so falling down before God’s Word, who He is, in worship and trust return us to Him. Romans 5:12-21 and Isaiah 53:10-12

God desires to extend his covenant of Salvation to all. God’s covenant with us is by the Blood of Jesus Christ, trusting and accepting God’s eternal focused authority over our lives instead of what tends to be our own short focused self governance. God gives us a new identity and value system which we could never comprehend its value. Ephesians 1:18 the riches of His inheritance in us, who trust, just as Abraham received every spiritual blessing when He trusted, so to also those who place their trust in the person and work of Jesus Christ, receive every spiritual blessing at that moment.
