Today’s Bible Reading: Numbers 18-20

Today’s Devotional: Numbers 18:1-7

Numbers 18:1 The priests were held accountable for the sanctuary and the priesthood to God. They were held accountable to God for the degree of faithfulness with which they walked out their calling and the ministry of the sanctuary that took place. We see then that every act would then be an act of worship and was to be worship to the Lord and not worship to their own, someone else’s, or to the world’s way of fulfilling their calling or ministry, but it had to be done God’s way; which He had laid out for them in His Word and which the priest were responsible for having a deep relationship with, which grew their understanding. Worship and ministry is to be done God’s way and is to be worship to God and not worship, reverence, to their own or another’s way of how they thought it best to be done. There was no guess work, God had already told them, they just need to have a relationship with the Word of God to understand His ways.

Paul in Philippians 1:9-11 put it this way; “that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ.” Approve is a word which means the evaluation of something, and Paul says to evaluate “things”, plural, that are excellent. The priests were to evaluate things and make a distinction of what is the proper and improper way to conduct themselves and their callings, this came by the knowledge and discernment of God’s Word; and that they were to be filled with the fruits of righteousness, they were to Love God and Love the people laying their desires down for the Spiritual growth and maturity of the others. So the Christian is to called to do the same, to give a systematic determination and assessment of a “thing’s” merit, worth, and significance, using the set standards found in His Word as the criteria governs our life and walk before the Lord so that we may be sincere (inward motives) and without offense (outward actions) till the day of Christ.

Numbers 18:2-7 we see a great reminder of our High Priest, Jesus Christ Hebrews 4:14-16. That He hasn’t gone empty handed, but has brought us with Him, Eph 2:18-19, and into the eternal purpose of the church, Eph 3:9-11. That we may be joined with Him and in service to Him, and not in service to our own desires or the desires of others. There is no work which He desires for us that He has not already given the Christian every gift to complete, the giftings only need to be equipped and built up, Eph 4:12-16. This happens by God’s Word being daily washed over the individuals heart by the Holy Spirit alongside the fellowship and gathering of the Body of Christ to be equipped and built up.

Because of Christ’s work on the cross and His Blood which paid for the forgiveness of our sins, all things have been placed in Christ and a great importance placed on the relationship with Christ and the Church, Eph 1:17-23. Everything is about Jesus and is in Jesus as our High Priest, Jesus is the point.
