Balak’s Response

Numbers 24:10 we see Balak’s response to Balaam’s blessing upon the children of Israel. Like so many times we see in scripture that God’s blessing of those He favors, one aspect, is often times an opportunity for a course change for those in opposition to the character of the Lord, and in that we see His Grace.

God towards Pharaoh,

Jesus towards Judas,

And how Christ works in and through the church to be salt to the rest of the world who are living in opposition to Jesus Christ.

Ancient civilizations would go to great lengths to acquire salt, and the discovery of a salt(s) deposit would profoundly affect the entire region, because it was an essential element in the establishment and furtherance of any civilization;

Salt preserves and enriches the character of food and other items;

Salt is an important compound for medical and healing purposes;

Salt is an important compound in our diet.

God in Numbers 24 used the children of Israel and Balaam, despite his greedy nature, to allow Balak to see the favor which was passing before his eyes. But Balak… Balak desired instead only to harden his heart and seek disaster for the children of Israel.

  1. His anger was aroused at Balaam’s blessings
  2. Balak saw God’s favor as an enemy
  3. Balak saw the favor of God as not being honorable

It was only after Balak firmly planted himself against the salt of God’s favor that the Lord pronounced His judgement on him and his people.
