Today’s Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 1-2

Today’s Devotional: Deuteronomy 1:1-8

Retelling of the Law for a new generation.

The journey of the children of Israel had been longer and more difficult than both God desired for them and which they had desired to be in a wilderness, and it was because of their unbelief in God and what He had said by that first generation who left Egypt. The children of Israel many times didn’t care where they were, whether Egypt or the Promised Land, they just didn’t want to be in the wilderness, and this indecisive behavior on choosing between the things of the world or the things of God contributed greatly to their unbelief. This next generation was now camping on the plains of Moab, and would be able to look across the Jordan River and see the Promised Land.

But the Lord instead of allowing them to rush over and ford the river, had the children of Israel sit and wait on Him for His leading and direction.

Moses’s heart was to prepare the children of Israel the best way possible, through God’s Word for the battles to come, and victory in them would only come by waiting, fellowshipping, and worshipping the Lord, by being about and trusting His Word.

Moses knew that if this second generation, this generation of faith, didn’t trust the Lord in the Promised Land and obey the Law then God’s covenant with them would work out against them and be a curse to them. The Lord through Moses sits Israel down in this last step of obscure times of the wilderness and before they would become a nation and patiently pleaded with them to, choose life, Deuteronomy 30:19.

God is both reminding and preparing the children of Israel, this is a common heart and desire of the Lord, that we will be continually reminded of the Lord and who He is , 2 Peter 1:12, so that we may remain in proper fellowship with Him and walking beside Him and in the Spirt.

Deuteronomy was a precious book to Jesus and in His time of preparation in the wilderness Jesus quoted the book of Deuteronomy three times.

When we are in seasons of waiting, be more in His Word, so that we’ll be more inclined to recognize His voice.
