Daily Devotional: Joshua 15

The Land and Cities of Judah

We can look at the many and various important paces and cities of Judah, and why they were important and what they were used for. A key characteristic of Judah would be they did not completely turn away from the ways of David later on when all the other tribes did, except for Benjamin.

The allotted lands given to each tribe. The Lord had a general calling on each of the tribes and to each of the families and individuals within the tribes. This calling was to rid each of their homes from sin and to spend time with the Lord and to strengthen one another so that they could complete this calling.

Joshua 15:63a we then see “The inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out. The fact that Jerusalem sits on a hill which made it easy to defend, it is understandable why Jerusalem was difficult to conquer.

… “But the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.” There’s really no good excuse or reason for why the city stayed in the hands of the Canaanites until the days of David, 2 Samuel 5:6-10.

Why it was that Judah did not completely drive out the sin, and what would cause them to stumble time after time, from their life and the inheritance which God desired for them to posses. We only see later repeated over and over in Judges, that the people continually did what was right in their own eyes. Instead of driving out from the land who had defiled the land, and obey the command of the Lord, the children of Israel often times enjoyed having them around so they could profit from their lifestyles of immorality, Judges 1:21, 27-36. The children of Israel decided that it was better to keep sin close to their door where they could profit from it instead of get it out of their lives. Throughout the book of Judges we see that the children of Israel valued their pocket books more than their relationship with the Lord, and to follow His Word. We see that because of their desire for keeping sin close, the name of the Lord became a by word and a second thought, and even to some a curse. There was no time for the Lord when things seemed great, but when troubles came the children of Israel never asked why they came.
