Today’s Bible Reading: Judges 9-11

Today’s Daly Devotional: Judges 9:1-21
Already, as soon as Gideon had died we see not only did Israel not wait to run after false gods, but we see even his son elevating himself above his brothers by murdering them and seeking to rule over all of Israel.
There we’re two decisions Gideon made which not only did they cause Israel to stumble while he was alive, but also played a big role to his son Abimelech’s actions:
- Gideon’s Ephod which lead to idolatry that he put up, and did not remove the false worship of it as he did before when the Lord had called Him.
- Gideon’s ephod is elevating himself to a place of a priest
- Multiplying many wives to himself.
Gideon’s desire to preserve his posterity and the works of his hands immediately sent Israel into idolatry with no period of the nation seeking the Lord after his death. The consequences of Gideon’s choices later in life had huge consequences on both his family and the nation.
Decisions that we may make have affects on those who watch and come after us, it sets an example for them to follow and an impressions which is placed on their life. That’s why Paul tells writes to the church in Philippi in Philippians 3:12-21 to never get to the point that we believe we have ascertained everything in this life and now we need to be recognized for it, scripture tells us to remain humble in all things. Paul continues by encouraging the Philippians to press on ward to attain the reward of our calling which is received not here but from the Lord in eternity, and Paul writes that there are a few changes in our life we can make in order to reach these goals:
- Have the same Christ like mind of self-humbleness
- Continue in the same way we have matured to this point, 3 words are important in Php 3:16 degree, rule, mind – we should walk completely surrendered to the God’s Word in our life, and to strive for this to be the center of everything we think and do as the Church.
- Paul says that we should follow the Biblical examples we have of a life which has self-humbled its self and what Biblical self-humbling is, and we should scope out those who are a pattern of this around us and let them be a positive impression upon our lives.
We do all of this because, there are many who creep into the church who walk contrary to Christ and also because we live in a crooked and perverse generation as Paul encouraged in Php 2:15.
