Today’s Bible Reading: Judges 12-15

Today’s Devotional: Judges 12

The children of Israel continued to do things as they were right in their own eyes. The dispute between Jephtha and Ephraim, they handled their grievances as it was right in their own eyes.

In 1 Kings 12, and 2 Chronicles 25, we see similar situations play out, and we know from 1 Kings 12 that we see the Lord’s Heart is and when His children will seek Him in every situation He will give clarity and guidance on how to move forward despite any bad calls we had made.

Disputes and not having the mind of Christ individually brings differences and even more disputes, which should not be present. They only serve fracture and damage what Christ has brought together in and by His death and resurrection, the Church. Which is one of the core and central themes we see in Paul’s writings to the Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians.

At minimum what the church needs to take away from Judges 12, is where do disputes come from? They come from individuals doing what is right in their own eyes and not what is right according to the Lord; and that is found only in His Word, where we find distinctions and where He tells us how we can live right with Him and right with others without disputes and differences.

Then in the remainder of Judges 12 we see three minor judges which we know little about, but what we do see mentioned about 2 of them is that they appear to have done more of what they had seen others do before them, multiplying wives to themselves. When younger Christians see disputes and differences magnified before them in the lives of others this is what hey believe the Christian life is all about and either walk away from it or only do the same in their own lives. But what should be magnified is the mind of Christ among Christians, and the Lord has given to us His mind, it’s His Word, and so therefore we should be in it daily and allow Him to speak to us from it, and if we do this then this is what will be patterned and walked out for generations to come.
