Today’s Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 1-3

Today’s Devotional: 2 Samuel 1:1-16

The news of Saul’s death came to David now when he was back in Ziklag after rescuing his family and friends from the Amalekites. David at this time had men coming to him who were men of valor and the news of Saul’s death was brought in the midst of great celebration of what the Lord was and had done. The news of Saul’s death was brought by the son of those who David had just finished fighting against and rescuing his family and friends from.

It was common for kings to reward news which was brought to them that favored the king, and if there was evidence to back that news up the reward was multiplied, and for that evidence to have been a crown and royal identifiers of course the reward would be multiplied even more.

The young man sought and reached for what would surely bring great reward and money for his trouble and danger scavenging amongst the battle field, but David did not reach for his promotion and ignore the heart of the Lord in the situation. David reached instead of the royal crown and signets for his own humble clothes and mourned because the one the Lord had anointed had fallen in battle against an enemy that God desired for him to overcome through the Lord; and was finished off by someone scavenging for their own advancement and of opportunities in life and not putting the heart of the Lord ahead of their own personal career advancement. David waited for the Lord to elevate him in the sight of Israel and not self exaltation. This is the mind of Christ which Paul wrote and encouraged the Philippians to put on, the self-humbling mind of Christ in Philippians 2.
