Today’s Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 4-7

Today’s Devotional: 2 Samuel 4

Israel’s panic after hearing Ish-bosheth, who had grown very powerful and strong in Saul’s dynasty and opposing David as king, had been killed in the city where David was based out of. No doubt this news would have sent shock waves that David was cleaning house of anyone who was in his way for the throne; this however could not have been any further from the truth.

Israel panicked and those within Saul’s kingdom quickly sought to shore up their own future strength and personal assurance for themselves. What Rechab and Baanah failed to see was strength by our own hand and that we bring to qualify ourselves before our King, Jesus Christ, is and will never be enough. Our strength and power plays will always only lead us to the exact same end, death. The only way we are qualified, delivered, and conveyed to our standing and position in Christ as Paul wrote to the Colossians in chapter 1 is it’s by His work and blood upon the cross.

It’s the strength of our King of Kings where our life is shored up in, because it’s Christ who is on the throne and has conquered over sin and death. There is no need for us to retaliate and do things in our own strength but we go humbly before Jesus for His mercy and not His approval of our own strength. We wait for His timing and Him to do things His way in our lives. Paul wrote to the Philippians that he had learned how to be content in every situation because he had learned that the Lord has a purpose and plan for every situation and circumstance in our life.
