Today’s Bible Reading: 1 Kings 13-15

Today’s Devotional: 1 Kings 13:1-10
There is no God like our God who knows the beginning from the end. The amazing prophecy that was spoken from the unknown profit would not be fulfilled for another 340 years, 2 Kings 23:5, in the days of King Josiah of Judah.
God’s announcement of judgement against the altar was more than just against Jeroboam or that physical altar, but was a declaration that the judgement upon false gods and false worship would come through a King, of the House of David. This would have been a rebuke which would have been a source of concern and a threat from Judah to the South. This prophecy would not be fulfilled as we know for hundreds of years, so the Lord gave an immediate sign which would have confirmed the Word from the Lord. God judged Jeroboam and the worship system in this immediate sign, a disobedient king and a false system of worship. Jeroboam casted his hand out to kill and destroy, the Lord withered and took away any power from his hand which the Lord is the supreme strengthener of, then the altar was split apart and ashes poured out. This false system of worship 1 Kings 12:33 is a well fit summary of what these were, the offering and everything that included were what had been devised in his own heart. This immediate sign which God had given was to be a caution and warning to everyone that things that are devised up in the heart of man in order to not loose numbers of worshippers in the North to the Southern kingdom, Jeroboam trusted his heart and other people for what lasts, and not God; 1 Kings 12:27-28.
This prophesy not only was for the hundreds of years later of who would break this altar and the false worship which had been set up in those times, but it also carries an eternal prophetic weight. That the King of Kings who would come through the House of David would break the false altars of worship that had be developed in the hearts of man for the purposes of man and numbers would be broken by, and that’s Jesus.
There is no God like our God who knows the beginning from the end; Isaiah chapters 44-48 as well as 41:19-23 are full of God unmasking idols and false gods which had plagued Israel with deception. A big area of this unmasking is their ability to prophecy, and God in Isaiah 7:14 amongst other places gives us the ultimate prophecy of what it is that tears down the false systems of worship and things which we elevate that take our main attention away from Jesus.
