Today’s Devotional: 1Kings 19:1-10

The Christian life is meant to be active and dynamic. The Christian life is meant to be marked with removing the priorities which are often times given to false idols and things which remove Jesus as our #1 priority and the hidden things which are contrary to who God is. And putting to death the desires and earthly expressions which we have again allowed to have priority over our lives or we’ve allowed to stay which are contrary to who God is, Paul in writing to the Colossian Believers in Colossians 3 exhorts all Christians which are new in Christ to put to death and remove these priorities and expressions which are found in our old man, who what our life was marked by before Christ which led us to go to Christ in the first place because we saw that an eternal position change is possible only in and through Christ Jesus; that is only half of the Gospel and Good news, the other half is that not only our eternal position and things of our past to be removed in our relationship with Him, but our future life remaining here on earth can change as well and it again is only possible in and through the life of Jesus Christ being worked into our life by the power of the Holy Spirit.

This is all done the exact same way Elijah did and responded to his present circumstances:

  1. Elijah immediately went to Judah, where those who seek to worship the Lord properly go to. So Elijah sought first for proper fellowship with others who sought to worship the Lord and remove and put to death the things in their life which lead them away from God as their #1 priority.
  2. Then Elijah went and sought the Lord for His clarity and understanding in the situation.
  3. We then see that the Lord responded.

The Lord’s response was most likely not what Elijah was hoping to hear, but it was what the Lord knew Elijah needed, His sustainment and promise from His Word which would be enough to carry Elijah through the present circumstances.

Because Elijah was nourished by the Lord and he sought the Lord and no one else’s clarity but God’s; Elijah was then able and his heart was the prepared to be spoken to from the Lord. Because the Lord’s Word already had nourished and strengthened Elijah he then grew in knowledge of who God was through a real and dynamic relationship with Him from His Word which grew Elijah to understand who he was and a deeper relationship that the Lord desired to grow in with him. This then prepared Elijah to understand who others are and how God sees others and the Lord’s eternal purpose and plan. Often times we go through what may seem like many obscure times in our life which the Lord is preparing us for different seasons of working the person and character of Jesus into our lives.

The Word of God with the Spirit of God is transformative in our lives, and it transforms us into the person God desires us to be. God’s Word to Elijah and His Spirit speaking to Elijah further transformed Elijah for the still future things God desired Elijah to step out into. If we don’t receive a continual fresh out pouring from His Word and His Spirit we are not going to be equipped to do these future things He desires us to step out into; they are too great for us alone, but they are not too great for Him.
