Today’s Devotional: 2 Kings 9:1-13

Stepping out in a new work

The young prophet was sent to anoint a new King of Israel, and is then told to flee quickly and not to delay to see if any reward may be given to him.

The young prophet had to step out in trusting the Word of the Lord as well as step out and obey the Word of the Lord. The same then also comes for Jehu, who is being anointed King. The calling of the Lord as well as the initial obedience is only part of trusting and obeying, but what the Lord calls those who He rests His Spirit upon and equips is a continuing and constant trust and obedience in the Word of the Lord as well as the character of who He is.

This trust and obedience can come only from being in fellowship with the Lord and His Word, and however the calling of the Lord comes, it comes by the Word of the Lord and so we should fully seek the full council of His Word as those who are called. Jehu as being anointed and called by the Lord was to write and know the Law of the Lord, which would have most likely kept him from his future folly, and which is the reason why the Lord called every King of His people to do so, to instruct them on what to and not to lead the Lord’s people in the way of.

Psalm 119 the Psalmist writes to fall in love with the Lord is to fall in love with His Word, and to fall in love with His Word is to fall in love with Him.

And in 2 Kings 9:11 we see that the world is always going to think of the one who loves and obeys God’s Word as a mad man.
