Today’s Bible Reading: Joshua 1-4

Today’s Devotional: Joshua 1:1-9

Moses has died and the congregation has stayed in the wilderness long enough. Moses who was a picture of God’s Law is unable to lead the congregation into God’s promised peace, or for the Christian a picture of a Spirit filled life. Joshua, a picture for us of Christ is the only one who can baptize us into the Holy Spirit and be our example in a Spirit filled life.

The Lord tells Joshua in Jos 1:2-3 I am giving and I have given. The Lord is the one who has given us every Spiritual blessing in order to live a Spirit filled life so that we can walk in and be obedient to His Word. Jos 1:4-5 Joshua’s calling is his enablement, Joshua was able to walk out his calling because the Lord was with Him and He has strengthened him for the specific calling of leading those who were before enslaved in Egypt into the Promised Land.

Joshua was to be strong and courageous in trusting who is with him and who strengthens him. Psalm 119:28, 50 the Psalmist writes that God’s Word has strengthened Him and given Him life. Joshua was to be careful to obey God’s word and his commitment to it would be the pillar of his success. God’s Word had to be on his lips, his mind, and he had to observe it; Joshua was not to just read God’s Word. By that He would have success in any endeavor the Lord called him to, and Joshua’s success did not depend only on his ability to keep God’s Word, but even more so was dependent on God’s presence with him.
