Today’s Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 21-22

Today’s Devotional: 2 Samuel 21:1-6

David and Israel had been in a drought a few years to this point. When David recognized and sought the Lord about their situation the Lord gave them understanding and discernment.

The reason was because of Saul’s zeal that was not in line with God’s heart, his dealings with the  Gibeonites. The Gibeonites were those from Joshua’s day who had tasted and seen the greatness of God and knew what fate they were to receive. So the Gibeonites worked quickly to gain the God of Israel’s favor, “Because of His Great Name” Joshua 9:9. Israel did not seek the Lord, Joshua 9:14, so we do not know 100% what the Lord’s response would have been at that time. We do see however here that the Lord did accept their grafting into Israel and that no matter the greatest zeal we may have for the Lord’s Word and Command, it can never be done out of line with God’s Heart of Love for others to see them restored back to Himself. God loves a repentant and humble heart desiring all to be restored to Him, and because the Lord has shown this to us we should show the same to others.
